3. How to crack Interview- HR interview

In the HR round, what exactly does an HR look for duringย the interview? As there is a lot of things for a Candidate like the way he/she communicates, Attitude, Dressing(Appearance), Confidence.

A. Communication skill:

Among a few core parameters, communication skills are of prime importance; communication skills is not about speaking good English or speaking with an accent. You will be tested on how carefully you listen, absorb, and communicate.

  • Listen: Actively listen to what the interviewer is asking. DO NOT interrupt the question or answer before the question is complete.
  • Absorb: Understand the meaning and context of the question. If you do not, donโ€™t hesitate to ask. Remember, no question is stupid.
  • Tip: Some candidates, who are not comfortable asking โ€œCan you please repeat?โ€ or โ€œCan you please elaborate?โ€, can do this an alternate way. Explain the question back to the interviewer as you understand & get confirmation. E.g. Q: โ€œWhat are your outside interests?โ€ You: โ€œSo you asking about any of my hobbies and interests other than in academics… right?โ€
  • Answer clear and loud: Once you get the question, answer in clear words, short and to the point, and of course loud. Murmuring under your breath is often frustrating for the interviewer.
B. Salary:
  • Invariably this question is asked in every HR interview – ‘How much CTC are you expecting?’
  • You should remember that as a fresher you do not have the privilege to bargain much. Nevertheless, try to negotiate in healthy terms because it shows that you are confident and you are willing to work for the company.
C. Confidence:
  • Sit straight and keep a comfortable posture. Do not lean or sit on edge of the seat, nor lean back too much.
  • Keep eye contact. Donโ€™t look into oblivion (read ceiling, curtains, etc.), while answering.
  • Keep a pleasant and smiling expression and show an interest in the proceedings.
  • Answer with simple, clear words and loud enough for the interviewer to hear.
  • Itโ€™s okay to say โ€œDonโ€™t knowโ€. That shows your comfort in accepting things you donโ€™t know about.

Note: Donโ€™t overdo โ€œDonโ€™t knowโ€ stuff. That might turn against you.

D. Flexibility:
  • The one thing they look for in freshers is the flexibility in utilizing his/her ability within its different operations – This could be for an expansion plan, an existing delivery process, for a product development team.
  • This is only effective, only if the learning ability of a candidate is strong and steep enough – that is efficient and quick. The test you on how will willing are you to learn and establish yourself.
  • Do not get nervous about your academics, that is not the only factor, so try to provide them with an impression that you are flexible fresher willing to learn and explore.
E. Adaptability:
  • Each company has a different working culture. When a company evaluates a candidate, one major quality they will look for is how compatible you are with their working culture.
  • Although you get information online on major corporates, preparing for this becomes slightly tricky for lesser-known companies.
  • So do your research and prepare accordingly. Remember they do not want to hire smart people, but good people with a will to learn.
